Rites of Passage

Within Society

Some rites of passage are designed to transmit cultural practices from one generation to the next - to better the odds of survival for young people and the society as a whole. Other rites of passage are designed to transmit cultural values and morality to the next generation so as to continue a sense of noble or divine spirit as the fabric of society.

In modern times, we tend to have neither.

Young people are no longer primarily influenced by elders who care about them to help them find a role within a community. Instead, young people are now influenced primarily by symbols of validation - things to spend money on, and their profession is not about a role within a community, but is transactional to gain purchasing power and to gain advantage in mate selection

Ancient Rites of Passage

Long before modern times rites of passage were a way to mark the transition from childhood to adulthood, and to bring each next generation into their community as full members with all the responsibilities and rights of an adult in society. Without completing these rites of passage a young person would not get treated with the same respect and reliability of an "adult" in their culture.

Throughout the many cultures of the world, and the long history of them, rites of passage have been different and varied – yet some consistent trends allow us to understand these ceremonies by their different functions: The main three categories being Performance-based, Endurance-based, and Reproductive rites of passage.
