What is the G3 Model (Gamer Growth Group) for Video Game Addiction
The G3 Model grew out of a desire to develop for ourselves and others to maintain a healthy relationship with video games, while also staying connected to our real-world community, building our real-world skills, and growing the best version of ourselves.
Video games give us easy access to feelings that are difficult to tap into in the real life. When we beat a difficult level of a video game we feel powerful and competent. When we learn to use a new tool or game item in the video game inventory we feel a mixture of curiosity, excitement and challenge as we learn to use the new item effectively. These feelings are the main mechanism behind gaming behaviors, these feelings are important to any and every person, and these feelings are also available, but difficult and complicated to encounter in the real world; but in video games, these feelings can be ours at the click of a button.
If only there was a way to find personal growth in the familiar patterns of our favorite video games. If only there was a community where we could find advice and encouragement in growing our real world lives, a place where we could be part of a group of people trying and succeeding to grow through similar challenges.
The G3 Model provides a structure for that growth, and a guide for those groups.
Self-Paced G3 Model
Progress through the G3 Model happens on your own time. Determined only by YOU, the gamer.
You move forward - move to the next level - when you're ready.
Not when your parent or your partner or some tragedy in your life tells you need to be moving more quickly move forward when you're ready to the next level.
In Level one we introduce you to the group - to the extent that each member wishes to introduce themselves. We also briefly discuss the different levels of the program.
Level two is the Inventory level - discussion focuses on what games you play and what you like about them.
Level three is about Exploring your Environment - discussion focuses on why other things don't draw you away from games - obstacles or prior experience or other reasons.
Level four is about your own Origin Story of how you first encountered gaming and got deeper into it.
Level five is where we discuss the costs and benefits of gaming at a deeper level than before.
Level six: "the Guild" is an exploration of community.
Level seven "the Paragon" is an examination of your best self - as you define that.
Level eight works to identify ways to build your various skill trees.
Level nine is about preparing you to face life's greatest challenges - whatever you perceive those to be.
Your progress through the levels at your own pace, though we recommend spending at least a week talking and journaling about each level. We also recommend starting at the beginning for your first week with G3 and progressing through the levels sequentially, also revisiting any previous levels as needed. At your first meeting we encourage you (but by no means require you) to introduce yourself and identify your Start Menu process of sharing what brings you here today.
